Photography had never remotely entered my world until, as a nineteen year-old back in 1977, I noticed three black & white landscapes taken by my future father-in-law on a welsh dresser. A few days later I was in Dixons in Camberley spending much of of my first months salary on a Chinon SLR. I soon upgraded to the now legendary Olympus OM-1 which was my constant companion for the next twenty-five years and went with me everywhere including many business trips around Europe and North America.

The meteoric rise of digital cameras was already well underway when I had my epiphany in 2005 with Tom Ang's BBC4 series 'A Digital Picture Of Britain' and shortly afterwards, and inspired by my talented artist daughter Lucy, I bought my first Canon EOS camera. It's no exaggeration to say to say that this marked a revolutionary moment for me. I was suddenly free to take endless pictures and experiment as much as I wanted and I had my own computer darkroom to experiment with.

In 2007 I left the City and, given a push by my daughters, I decided to take my hobby rather more seriously and have since been involved in shooting portraits, landscapes, weddings and many other projects and commissions. It's also nice to know that quite a few of my photographs are adorning household walls all the way from London to Spain.

After so many years of carrying my Olymus OM-1 around the world I'm now very much a Canon man and I can’t imagine that is likely to change. Ultimately though it matters not what brand of camera equipment or phone you use because your eyes and imagination are the most important lenses and software you need.

I love this picture of me, caught by my talented artist daughter Lucy on her phone in a bar in Brighton before a gig. Staring into a cappuccino is one of the pleasures of my life!
